Numeracy

We use a variety of materials to enable the pupils to understand concepts in line with the Primary National Strategy. KS 1 children will concentrate on understanding the numbering system and be given opportunities to practice key skills in real life contexts. Games, rhymes, role play, technology, chants as well as written tasks are used to develop the children's understanding of different concepts.

This work is continued and developed during KS2, in which prior learning is built upon. Pupils are encouraged to become increasingly involved in decision-making and to become more independent in their learning. Teachers plan in great detail to ensure coverage of key skills but also to ensure that the needs of individual learners are met.

When it is appropriate teachers will use materials from a maths scheme. Across the school the Abacus maths scheme is favoured however, teachers will use other resources and schemes in order to provide learner with the best experience and materials to move their understanding forward.

Mrs P-S is the school Numeracy coordinator.

Literacy

Literacy planning is linked to the Primary National Strategy. Language development in all its aspects forms the basis of the learning process. We provide exciting opportunities through which the children develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The children are encouraged to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to become enthusiastic and critical readers. They experience a wide range of written texts as models and are given opportunities to write for a variety of audiences and purposes across the whole curriculum.

Mrs Hill is the school Literacy coordinator.
